As we enter the summer season when parents seek recreation opportunities for their kids, many pool-related questions are often asked at the Parks and Rec office. Some of them are as follows:

When does the pool open for the season? The Municipal Pool, which includes the main pool, diving well, splash pad, and Tot Lot, opens at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 10.

How much does it cost for me to use the pool? Season passes/memberships are $40/person. Single-day admits are $4/person. Admission is free for children ages 2 years and under with a paid adult.

What are the pool hours? The pool hours are available online at www.ci.austin.mn.us in our summer brochure. You can also stop in at the Parks and Rec office at 500 Fourth Ave. NE to pick up a printed copy, which contains pool hours plus a wealth of other information on activities and facilities.

How do I know if the pool is open on any particular day once the season begins? You can watch for the “Open” flag near the diving well. The pool(s) and splash pad will not open if the air temperature is less than 67 degrees. Also, if we are experiencing inclement weather, the pool will not open.

Is the pool available for special events? Absolutely. Reservations can be made for your group by contacting the Parks and Rec office at 1-507-433-1881. Staff will be able to provide rental rate information based upon which areas of the pool you are seeking.

How old does my child need to be to come to the pool without a parent or adult guardian? A child must be a minimum eight years of age to be at the pool unaccompanied by an adult.

How old does my child need to be to use the waterslides? User height versus age is a better guide for lifeguards to determine if someone has safely made it down the slide and out of the splash area. Since the slide exit area of the pool is over three feet in depth, our rule is a minimum 48 inches in height for slide users. This enables slide users to stand and touch the bottom of the waterslide exit area whilst being able to have their head above the water level.

What if my toddler isn’t potty-trained; can he still use the pool? Anyone, regardless of age, who doesn’t have full control of bodily discharge functions is required to wear a swim diaper. They are available for purchase at the pool.

Can I bring food items to the pool? You are welcome to bring food items to the picnic area, but please keep in mind that no glass containers are allowed. Also, for your convenience, a number of food items are available for purchase at the pool concession stand.
