Although the regular season is still about two months away, there is a lot of heavy competition for the Austin Bruins this week.
The team is hosting approximately 150 players in it’s main team camp this week and things will culminate when the Bruins play their inter-squad All-Star Game at Riverside Arena at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
The All-Star game will feature players who are trying to make the Bruins’ roster battling head to head with their positions and hockey futures on the line.
The week could mean the end of a chance at playing in the NAHL for several players, but it could also be the start of something big for other players. The Bruins, who are entering their 10th season on the ice, have sent a plethora of players to the college level. Austin had 16 players commit to colleges from last year’s team.
A pair of former Bruins recently started their path to the NAHL as Nico Sturm, a forward, has signed a contract with the Minnesota Wild and Jake Kielly, a goalie, competed in camp for the Vancouver Canucks.
Former Bruin goalie Mads Sogard was drafted by the the Ottawa Senators in the second round of this year’s NHL draft.
Former Austin players Christian Folin and C.J. Smith have also enjoyed professional hockey careers as Folin has played in over 230 NHL games and Smith has compiled 103 total points in 140 games between the NHL and AHL. Smith recently signed a two-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres.
The cost of a ticket for the All-Star game is $5.
Austin’s first home game this season will be against Aberdeen on Oct. 4. The Wings are the defending NAHL champs and they ended Austin’s season in the NAHL Divisional playoffs last year.
