Severe thunderstorms cause ruckus for summer festivities

Storm systems traveling through the region have caused some problems for Mower County residents over the weekend.
In Lyle, severe thunderstorms downed many trees and branches in town, said Mayor Gary Harrison. There was also a power outage on Sunday for about three hours, which eventually was restored later that evening.
The Lyle Fire Department announced on Sunday night that the fireworks show was canceled because of unsafe ground conditions. The Lyle City Council will meet tonight to decide whether or not to reschedule the fireworks, he said.
Despite the damages sustained, Harrison said most of Lyle’s residents showed their true colors during times of distress and pitched in with cleanup efforts.
“It was a fantastic weekend, except for the storm,” he said. “The community came together to clean up the mess. The fantastic residents of Lyle took down everything in the park so that it would take no further damage.”
The outlook for this week
If Mower County residents were looking for a reprieve from the onslaught of storms, they might want to think again.
The National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wisconsin, projected possible thunderstorms through the week, with an ongoing risk for heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
The NWS predicted a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms on the Fourth of July, with the high reaching 84 degrees.
