An Austin man was arrested after surveillance footage allegedly caught him stealing an Amazon package from a southwest residence Tuesday afternoon.
According to Austin Police Chief David McKichan, the victims reported that they had surveillance footage of a man stealing a package containing bedding for a guinea pig from their front porch. The footage also showed a blue vehicle leaving the scene.
An officer found a matching vehicle, a blue 2000 Chevy Malibu, in the 200 block of Fourth Avenue Southeast. The registration came back to a man matching the description of the suspect seen in the video.
Police obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and found the stolen package inside, McKichan said. They also found other packages and mail that was not addressed to the vehicle’s owner.
Police arrested Andrew Spencer Brody, 35, for felony mail theft. He is in the Mower County Jail awaiting a possible charge.
Police obtained a search warrant for Brody’s residence and found more mail and packages not addressed to him, McKichan said.
The investigation is still ongoing. McKichan urges anyone who had mail or packages they were expecting but did not receive to report it to the Austin Police Department, as he believes there may have been more victims.
McKichan said the case might not have been solved had the victims not had a security camera.
A review of Brody’s criminal record shows prior convictions for theft.
