The Austin girls tennis team opened its season with a pair of losses as it lost 7-0 to Winona and fell short 5-2 to Mankato West in Winona Tuesday.

The No. 4 doubles team of Maisy Bothun and Tori Watkins picked up their first varsity win for the Packers (0-2 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) when they beat Mankato West’s McKenna Schreiber and Julia Ulman by scores of 7-6, 3-6, 11-9. Laura Wernimont of Austin won the No. 4 singles match over West’s Madison Piemens-Schunk 6-2, 6-0.

“Maisy and Tori played really well today and their efforts paid off in this match.  Lauren Wernimont played a great match to get her win,” Austin head coach Jeff Anderson said. “Overall we are getting better. We just need to keep playing and learning as the season continues.”
