ROCHESTER — The No. 5 seeded Austin football team had its season end with its seventh straight loss, losing to No. 4 Rochester Mayo 34-10 in the Section 1AAAAA quarterfinals Tuesday.

The Packers (2-7)  had their chances in the first half, but the Spartans (5-4) stopped Austin on three separate trips inside the 15-yard line as the Packers struggled to come up with big plays in goal-to-go situations.

Austin pulled to within 14-2 when Oliver Andersen sacked Cade Sheehan in the end zone with 4:09 left in the first half, but the Packer’s ensuing drive stalled at Mayo’s 15-yard line and the Spartans converted an 84-yard drive to close that half that was capped by a two-yard TD pass from Sheehan to Cayden Holcomb making it 21-2 with nine seconds left in the half.

“I thought we played well,” Austin head coach Ed Schmitt said. “They made some big plays on us and we’ve got to score there (in the red zone), but I’m so proud of them. This team could bury their heads in the sand, but I thought these guys fought against a good team. I thought the game was closer than the score showed.”

Andy Chesak returned to action for the Packers after missing a big chunk of the season with an injury. He finished with 119 yards of offense in his final game for the Packers and Andersen, a senior, finished with two sacks.

Schmitt said the coaching staff and the team gained a lot of experience in his first year at the helm.

“We had lots of learning. I learned a ton,” Schmitt said. “These guys have planted the seed for the program. I don’t want them to hang their heads, because they’ll see it grow.”
