The No. 7 ranked Hayfield boys basketball lost to No. 8 Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (5-0 overall, 2-0 Gopher) by a score of 72-71 in overtime in Waterville Friday.
The Vikings (3-1 overall, 2-1 Gopher) had a chance to take the lead with five seconds remaining in OT, but they committed a turnover when they had a open player cutting the hoop.
“It’s a tough way to lose,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “It was a really good high school basketball game and it lived up to its billing.”
WEM missed a game-winning put-back at the buzzer of regulation and it scored the first four points of overtime.
Hayfield went 11-for-24 on three-pointers as Patrick Towey scored 23 points.
Hayfield scoring: Patrick Towey, 23; Ethan Slaathaug, 22; Luke Dudycha, 14; Easton Fritcher, 7; Isaac Matti, 5; free throws: 80 percent (8-for-10)
