Nicole Anderson walks to her seat during the processional for her graduation at from New Dominion School at Gerard Academy last spring. This was a fairly ordinary photo you might find at any graduation around the country, but surrounded by smiling faces from Nicole’s life at Gerard, it was the end of one journey and the beginning of another. I had come to know Nicole after a couple assignments and by the time of this special event I came to admire her strength and resolve.
Randy Rauen hugs his daughter Kaydence after his jump at Plunging for Pink. Kaydence never left the beach as her dad jumped and greeted him at the edge despite him being cold and wet.
Southgate Elementary students approach the Cedar River shoreline after a short canoe trip down the river. Such a wonderful spring day, this image really encompassed what it was like to be outside.
No pot of gold, but still worth chasing.
It’s amazing how a year in review can remind you of a moment, especially when you are a photographer for a small daily newspaper.
After doing this job for so many years, the photos a photographer takes stop becoming only about the moment, but instead start to tell the story of why you took the photo in the first place.
The moment becomes memory and in a lot of ways the memory can be more striking than the image and so with that in mind I present the top photos I enjoyed taking in 2019.
Sometimes it’s worth it to take one last look when leaving an assignment. I was leaving the Great Frontier Bullriding show at the Mower County Fair when this event started taking shape between rounds. Rick Loucks went end over end during a very different kind of race.
