An Austin man has been sentenced to a total of eight years probation for two felony charges of fleeing police.
Logan Carlyle Cox, 23, received five years probation for escape from custody and three years of probation for fleeing peace officer in motor vehicle, both of which are felonies. A misdemeanor charge of driving after revocation was dropped.
Both sentences run consecutively. Cox originally pleaded not guilty to all three charges, but changed his pleas to guilty as part of the plea agreement, which got the misdemeanor dropped.
According to the court complaint, law enforcement was alerted that Cox, a Mower County Jail inmate, had escaped from a sentence to serve (STS) work crew on July 3, 2019.
Officers and deputies began searching for Cox and were told by a witness that he had been seen running through the backyard of a southeast Austin residence and had left the area in a Cadillac heading south on Fourth Street Southeast.Law enforcement spotted the suspect vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and began pursuing it throughout the southeast, but were forced to pull back due to the reckless speed. The vehicle was located stopped in the 400 block of 15th Street Southeast. Officers searched the area and saw Cox run between houses in the 200 block of 12th Street Southeast. A witness reported seeing Cox go into one of the houses. Officers then surrounded the residence and took Cox into custody.
Cox told police he ran from the STS crew because he saw his girlfriend with another man and got upset.
Judge Kevin Siefken handed down the sentence.
