The Hayfield girls basketball team scored a huge upset when it edged out No. 4 ranked WEM (18-2 overall, 10-1) 44-36 in Waterville Friday.
When the teams first met on Dec. 12, WEM scored the first 20 points and won 53-21. This time around, WEM scored just one point in the last four minutes as Hayfield (10-10 overall, 3-8 Gopher) hung on.
“The first game was one of the most embarassing games I’ve been a part of,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “The girls came out tonight and executed the game plan to perfection. We took care of the ball and we were the aggressors.”
Lila Gronseth had 16 points for the Vikings.
