Published 7:01 am Saturday, March 14, 2020
The Municipal Swimming Pool will open for the season at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 8.
A season swim pass is $40 per person or $50 for adults, which includes noon-hour lap swim and all water fitness classes.
Planning has started for this year’s Fourth Avenue Fest to be held on Wednesday, June 10. The pool will be open and free from 6-8 p.m. that evening.
Also, save the date for the free Family Fun Night on Friday, Aug. 6.
Summer Recreation
The brochure is ready and is in the process of being distributed through local schools; the brochure should make it to homes in backpacks during the week of March 16.
Online registration for summer recreation activities will begin on April 1 for Park and Recreation and Jay C. Hormel Nature Center programs.
Among the popular returning activities will be “Rolling Rec,” which will meet on Fridays in designated neighborhood parks this summer, along with Library Story Time, for the younger brothers and sisters who might be too young to participate in the games. Rolling Rec and Story Time are both free programs which are available to all kids who show up at the designated park(s) this summer on the scheduled Fridays. Please note: Inclement weather may play a factor in holding this activity from week to week.
Summer Employment
Are you seeking a seasonal job? You may stop in to pick up your application or print the seasonal application off our web site.
APR has many part-time job opportunities for ages high school and up. Are you retired and looking for something to get you outside? There may be something for you.
Current openings are in park maintenance, municipal pool management, lifeguarding, concession sales and admissions, and recreation. Please check the city website at www.ci.austin.mn.us for related employment opportunities.
Mites 3-on-3 Hockey
Mites 3-on-3 hockey will be held from 6-7 p.m. on March 17 and 30, April 6, 13, 20 and 27. Games will begin on Tuesday, March 17. The remainder of the games will be held on Monday evenings. The fee is $40/player.
Learn to Skate
Learn to Skate will be 6-6:45 p.m. on March 26, April 2 and 9 at Riverside Arena. Austin Park and Rec is offering this opportunity for beginners ages 3-10 years who wish to learn how to skate. Participants will fall down, so elbow pads and shin pads are recommended and helmets are required to be worn at all times. Both helmets and skates are available for rental at Riverside Arena. Parents or guardians (of at least 16 years of age) may assist the participant(s) at no charge. Skates are available for them to rent as well for $1/time. The participant registration fee is $20.
Jay C. Hormel Nature Center
The next open evening for star gazing at the Sola Fide Observatory will be 8-10 p.m. on Saturday, March 21.
The two sessions for Family Maple Syrup Making are both full plus a waiting list for each. This early (almost) spring has been ideal for maple sap gathering as it has evidently been by the pail full. This should make for a good supply of maple syrup for resale at the Nature Center within a few short weeks.
