Keeping art alive: Kits from Austin Area Arts keeping kids active in the arts

Jenna Grabeau is giving it her best shot when it comes to making sure that children do not lose their artistic touch during the COVID-19 pandemic-induced shutdown.
Grabeau, who is the education coordinator at Austin Area Arts, has stayed busy by producing art kits that can be purchased online and delivered to homes. The kits are meant for students who are in grades first through eighth. The kits cost $10 and approximately 60 of them have been purchased so far.
“It’s good to stay creative and keep your hands busy,” Grabeau said. “We just want to make sure that there are still art options at this time. We’re used to having scheduled art classes and this is a different way to get that to them.”

Grabeau has made about eight different kinds of kits so far, including polymer clay kits and college kits. She comes up with the ideas on her own and takes photos to provide instructions for the projects.
“I based it off our kids’studio,” Grabeau said. “They are more arts based and not crafts.”
Grabeau has always been interested in arts and earned her Associates Degree in fine arts at Riverland Community College.
“It’s really important to have art making opportunities for kids,” Grabeau said. “It’s nice to see people are really enjoying these and it breaks up their day.”
