*IMPORTANT PROPERTY TAX HOMESTEAD NOTICE*
* This will affect your 2024 property taxes and eligibility for the Property Tax Refund
Have you purchased or moved into a property in the past year?
Contact your county assessor to file a homestead application if you or a qualifying relative occupy the property as a homestead on or before December 31, 2023. You may go online at https://www.co.mower.mn.us/329/Homesteads to obtain your specific homestead application.
What is a qualifying relative?
A qualifying relative for both Agricultural and Residential homesteads include: parent, stepparent, child, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, or niece of the owner, by blood or marriage.
When do I apply?
You must apply on or before December 31, 2023.
Once homestead is granted, annual applications will not be necessary for owner-occupied property.
An annual application is required for all relative homesteads.
If you sell, move, or for any other reason no longer qualify for the homestead classification, you are required to notify the county assessor within 30 days of the change in homestead status.
How does having my property classified as homestead affect my property taxes?
For properties valued under $517,200, they will have a lower tax liability for homesteading. Proceeds from the sale of a homesteaded property can receive favorable tax treatment when filing your income tax return.
