Austin eighth grader Lily Haedt was under fire all night long, but she didn’t lose her cool in net, despite the fact that the Packers took a 10-0 loss to Luverne in Riverside Arena Monday night.
Luverne (6-3 overall) scored six times in the first period, but Haedt rebounded and stopped 39 of the 42 shots she saw in the final two periods. The first-year varsity goalie finished with 59 total saves.
“It’s a big step up from 12U. It’s a lot different, but it’s actually fun. My team supports me and my coaches are amazing,” Haedt said. “My team really stepped it up in the second and third period tonight. You have to keep in the mindset that it’s always 0-0.”
The Packers mustered just five shots in the loss, but the defense was able to keep Luverne in check for the final two periods.
“As an eighth grader, (Lily) stopped 85 percent of their shots and that’s a good start for her,” Akkerman said. “She’s really picked it up. As a team, they work on building each other up and I’m really proud of them.”
Austin (1-7 overall) carries just three seniors on its roster and the team has 15 players that are freshman or younger.
“The confidence is growing and they’re working together as a team,” Akkerman said.
The younger players on the team have gained their confidence with the help of their more experienced teammates.
“We usually work on team bonding and we have a big sister-little sister set up where we all build each other up,” Haedt said.
