Luverne “Verne” Darcy Maier, age 65, of Sargeant, Minnesota, passed away Friday, December 29, 2023, at his home in Sargeant. Luverne was born on January 14, 1958, in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Joseph and Vyneta (Burnett) Maier. He attended school in Mitchell, South Dakota. On October 16, 1981, Luverne was united in marriage to Kristine Hope Powell at Crane Chapel in Austin. The couple was blessed with one son, Noah. Verne worked for the Milwaukee Railroad, Hormel from 1981-2001, the City of Hayfield from 2001-2018, and retired from Waste Management in August 2022. Verne loved his Harley, traveling in the RV, meeting new people, and seeing God’s wonders. Everyone who knew him knew he loved to talk. He could talk the legs off a dead bug; you could never end the conversation as Verne kept on talking. He was a very good provider for 42 years to his wife and son, Noah. Verne and Kristine waited 17 years for Noah, and he became such a blessing in their lives. He loved Ironwood Christian Ranch as it was so peaceful, and tinkering with all kinds of things. Verne was very dedicated to all his jobs, two of which he retired from. He was looking forward to full retirement but God had other plans for him. Verne had a very deep soul with lots of love to give.
Verne is survived by his wife, Kristine; son, Noah; mother-in-law, Cheryl (David) Stigney; sisters-in-law, Lisa (Paul) Sangineto, Laura (Bobby) Gladden, and Collette Tauer; brother-in-law, Stephen (Kristie) Dennison; nieces, Heather Maier, Missy Maier, Shalinda Maier, Alexandria Sherman, Sakari Daluna, Miranda Dennison, Chantel Dennison, Maria Green, and Hayley Dennison; nephews, Adam Tubbs, Bobby Maier, Teven Anderson, Nate Scott, Aaron Sherman, Bobby Gladden, Ben Gladden, Cole Dennison, and Josh Tauer; and his beloved poodle, Jurnie Hope. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Vyneta Maier; sister, Starla Dawn Maier; brothers, Gayland and Joel Maier; aunt, Vicki Wilcox Waltz; sister-in-law, Vicki Powell; and brother-in-law, Chad Dennison.
A celebration of Verne’s life will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.
