Summer is here and families are gearing up for vacations, outdoor adventures, and days by the pool.
However, in the excitement of summer, there lies a concern that often goes unnoticed: the dreaded “summer slide,” where children lose skills and knowledge over the summer break. This can have significant implications for a child’s reading progress. The good news is that reading, even just a few minutes a day throughout the summer, can help prevent this achievement loss and it also leads to free rewards at the library!
The Austin Library serves as resources for families, offering books, programs, and activities designed to keep minds engaged and stave off the summer slide. From kids to adults, everyone can benefit from the resources available here at the public library this summer.
At the heart of the library’s mission is literacy. By providing access to books for readers of all ages, the library plays a crucial role in fostering a love of reading and learning. For young children, storytime sessions and programs introduce them to the wonder of books and help develop essential pre-reading skills.
For children, teens and adults the summer reading program encourages regular reading habits and offers incentives to keep them motivated throughout.
From STEAM workshops to arts and craft sessions, movie screenings and author talks, the library offers something for everyone. These programs not only keep minds active but also encourage exploration, creativity, and critical thinking. Stop in the library to get a Reading & Activity Log for the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge for youth and adults.
