The announcement that Kathy Green will be resigning her remaining time on the Austin Public Schools Board to spend more time with family brings the total number of seats on the board open for election this year to four.
Three of the positions, those held by Don Leathers, CeCe Kroc and Evan Sorenson, will be a part of the general election, while Green’s seat will be decided through a special election to round out the remaining two years of her term.
The filing period for the seats is July 30 through Aug. 13 and we hope you will considering taking a run for one of those seats.
Informational meetings were held Monday and Tuesday and a third meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the District Office Board room on July 18.
We commend all those who run for office who are willing to represent their community to make it a better place stop in for the meeting. From City Council to County Commission to school board, each of these bodies represents an opportunity to be a part of community growth.
However, a seat on the school board is a rather unique position because not only are you playing a part in growing and maintaining a vibrant school district, but you are playing a part in our future -— namely the students that pass through the halls of Austin’s schools.
Viewpoints and the willingness to work with others toward a common cause helps us all when it comes to this very important task.
We’re not asking that you throw your hat in the ring, of course, only that you consider what you could possibly bring to public service of this type. Weigh whether or not you feel you have the background and the drive to serve.
It can only make us stronger.
