When you least expect it, time catches up to you.
In recent years I’ve started to notice athletes who I once covered while they were in high school starting and raising their only families.
I’m sure it won’t be long before one of those kids is competing in a sport that I’ll be covering and I can claim two generations of coverage for the Herald.
The initial reaction of this phenomenon is that it makes me feel old. But when I think deeper, the idea of covering multiple generations is actually comforting.
There is something special about the tradition and culture of sports and when a parent is able to pass their passion onto their children, that is magnificent.
Sports are a great way for children to learn about the world. They have to learn rules and regulations, they must work with their coaches and teammates, and they are forced to respect authority.
What better way for a young athlete to learn about their sport, than from their parents who already know what it’s like to compete.
