The Austin School Board will have at least two new faces on the board for this upcoming cycle.

With the filing period ending Tuesday, five have filed for three available seats in the regular election and two have filed for a special election for a fourth seat.

In July, longtime board member Kathy Green announced that she would be resigning effective Nov. 4 leaving two more years left on her current term.

During a July 8 School Board meeting, Green said her decision came down to wanting to spend more time with family.

“My service to the school board has been rewarding and now the district is in a good place,” she said at the time. “The time is right to pass the opportunity on to others with a passion for the education of our students.” 

Green, who won reelection in 2022, was set to retire at the end of the year, however, in order to have a special election she needed to resign prior to the election and thus she moved the date up to Nov. 4, her last day.

Isabella Krueger and Dan Zielke have filed for the special election and the winner would serve out those final two years.

Meanwhile, Don Leathers and CeCe Kroc have filed to run again in the general election and look to hold onto their seats. Another current board member, Evan Sorenson, has opted not to run for a second term.

Joining Leathers and Kroc on the Nov. 5 ballot will be Robert Hartman II, Berghyn Hull and Watsana Thiravong.

Those running have until the end of the day Thursday to withdraw their names from the race.
