Every time the Mower County Fair comes around, I’m always reminded that we are not that far from the high school sports season.

Beyond the smell of the food stands and the roar of the motor vehicles on the grandstand, lies thoughts of what is to come. Within a couple of weeks, area teams will be taking the field and competing once again.

There is a certain uniqueness to the Fall sports season as many of these athletes have been out of sight for the past three months. Also, there will likely be a new group of sophomores and juniors who are ready to jump up to varsity after playing JV last season.

It’s always interesting to see the new names that pop up in the box score, but more interesting is when a familiar name starts to make a bigger impact. 

A new season brings new opportunities and the athletes who have worked hard all summer are likely to have a head start.

Within a month or so, we’ll know which ones made the biggest leap.
