Janice Ione Slack was born October 15, 1934 in Austin, Minnesota to Clifford and Sadie Kearns. She had one older brother and together they grew up surrounded by farm life and animals. She graduated from Austin High School in 1953.
Shortly after graduation, she met Kenneth “Ken” Slack. They soon realized their belief in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and their life goals aligned. They married on November 20, 1954 at First Baptist Church in Austin.
During her early married life, Janice worked at Hormel as a punch card operator. Later on, her natural artistic ability led her to Gordy’s SuperValu where she was their pastry artist with a particular fondness for cake decorating. Janice loved people and always made anyone feel at ease, a skill that drew her to become an in-home health aide for Sacred Heart Care Center. She enjoyed gardening, board games, reading and growing her faith.
Janice was a member of Grace Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a Vacation Bible School teacher and helped in the nursery and kitchen.
Janice died on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Society where she had been in hospice for a very short time with pancreatic cancer.
She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Noel Slack of Phoenix, Arizona, and Joel and Sonia Slack of Crosslake, Minnesota; grandchildren, Nicole (Joshua) Bailey of Moorhead, Minnesota, Justin (Taylor) Slack of West Fargo, North Dakota, and Andrew Slack of Bloomington, Minnesota; great grandchildren, Easton, Brekken, Sydney and Macie; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Phyllis Whittaker of Alexandria, Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; mother; father; brother; and several in-laws.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Thursday August 15, 2024 at Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Dan Mielke officiating. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery where she will join her husband.
Blessed be her memory.
