Reuben D. Murphy, 83

Reuben David Murphy passed away at 83 years old, prior to his passing, he was residing in Austin, MN at St. Mark’s Independent Senior Living. After a short battle with bladder cancer that had metastasized, Reuben peacefully passed at Good Samaritan Comfort Care in Austin, MN on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Reuben was born on July 30, 1941, to Vernon and Margaret (Tesch) Murphy. At the time the family resided in Austin, shortly thereafter, moving to Lyle, MN. Reuben was baptized at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle on December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. Reuben was a lifelong resident of Lyle until his late 70’s. On February 18, 1961, Reuben married the mother of his 5 children, Sharon (Newkirk) Osmundson, later divorcing. On July 28, 1990, Reuben married Anna C. (Stevenson) Murphy at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. In 1959, Reuben graduated from Lyle High School going directly into the workforce. Reuben worked in many different occupations. Reubens work history started at 6 years old with a paper route. Reuben worked for many years as an over the road truck driver, ending his career doing local hauling. Reuben spent 30 years as a volunteer firefighter in Lyle. Many of those years were spent as a training officer for the fire department. Reuben was also a member of the Lyle American Legion. Reuben’s hobbies include reading, snowmobiling, camping and following the grandkids and great grandkids in their many sporting events.
Reuben is survived by his five children, Tammy (Steve) Roberts, Terri (Paul) Hanson, Troy (Renae) Murphy, Thane (Deb) Murphy, and Tracey (Connie) Murphy; 11 of his 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Roberts, Christopher Roberts, Blake (Jen) Hanson, Kyle (Macy) Murphy, Logan (Lydia DuPay) Murphy, Noah Murphy, Joshua (Brittany) Murphy, Devin Murphy, Luke (Katelynn) Murphy, Sydney (Jake) Pries, and Nate Murphy; 10 great grandchildren, Maci and Brayden Murphy, Briella and Brycen Hanson, Masyn and Eli Hanson, Isaiah, Gage, and Myles Thompson and Bennett Shelton; sister, Nyla (Larry) Hansen; brother, Dean Murphy; brother-in-law, Bruce Coleman; and many nieces and nephews.
Reuben was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; parents, Vernon and Margaret Murphy; brother, Derald; sister, Carolyn; and his grandson, Alex (Jen) Hanson in December of 2023, which was a very difficult loss for Reuben to find peace with due to the unnatural order of his passing.
A celebration of life for Reuben will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2024, at the Lyle American Legion Post 105, in Lyle, MN. Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes are assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
