GRAND MEADOW – Even when things got tough, the Superlarks didn’t back down against the No. 1 volleyball team in Class A as they hung around for most of the night in a loss to Mabel-Canton by scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-19 in GM Tuesday night.
GM (2-3 overall) jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the first game but it couldn’t hang on and the Cougars jumped out to an 11-2 in the second game before GM battled back to within 23-19. GM also pulled to within 19-17 in the final game on a kill by Gracie Foster.
“Last year when we got in our slumps, we would let it all get away. Tonight we were able to get out of those slumps,” said Foster, who finished with six kills. “It was a major confidence booster for us to be able to dig out of those holes and we’re all pretty happy with this.”
GM head coach Matt Roesen said he was pleased with how his team fought against a tough foe. The Superlarks have a lot of experience on their side this season and he’s expecting to see the team improve throughout the year.
“I think we learned about ourselves and not being complacent. We were able to push through in all three sets,” Roesen said. “We’ve got some things to work on, but we’ll get better with each game. I’m so proud of this team and we’re more experienced this year.”
The Cougars (9-0 overall) were relentless on their side as they didn’t give up very many easy points. GM had to work for every point it got in the match.
“It shows how much bonding and time they put in,” Foster said of the Cougars. “They trust each other and they communicate all of the time, which is fantastic. They all work really hard.”
