LEROY – The LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle-Pacelli football team had to make some adjustments, but it was able to hold off Houston by a score of 48-34 in LeRoy Friday night.

The Hurricanes (1-3 overall) dominated time of possession in the first half and they pulled to within 28-20 when Morgan Rowherder converted a one-yard TD plunge with seven seconds left in the first half and that momentum carried over to the second half. Houston had a chance to take the Cardinals down the wire as they drove deep into L-O/L-P territory early in the fourth quarter while trailing 35-26. However, the Cardinals recorded two straight tackles for a loss from the five-yard line and they forced an incomplete pass on fourth down.

“We just had simple fixes. When one person doesn’t do their job, it opens up a gap for them,” Cardinal senior linebacker Ryder Stern said. “We started fixing that, we made stops. They’re offense is really confusing, but watching film all week, we could see some of the tells.”

After the fourth down stop, Tyson Stevens broke off a 29-yard TD run to put the Cardinals (4-0 overall) back in the driver’s seat. Stevens was glad to escape with the win, but he knows the team can play better.

“We were pressing a little too much, but as long as we settle down and play our game, we’ll do just fine. We just have to do our jobs and rely on each other,” Stevens said. “Some of our wins have been sloppy and I think the best is yet to come. I think we’re really going to kick it in gear soon.”

Camden Hungerholt, who ran for 255 yards and three scores, turned on the jets to convert a 76-yard TD run on third and nine to put the Cardinals up 35-20 and he iced the game when he ran for a 36-yard score that put L-O/L-P up 48-26 in the fourth quarter.

“Camden Hungerholt is a superstar and I’m not going to apologize for having him on my team,” L-O/L-P head coach Trevor Carrier said. “He’s a good football player. The whole town knows this and the whole section knows this. The kid plays hard.”
