Carol Jean was born on January 18, 1942, in Austin, Minnesota to Thomas Eugene and Catherine Cecelia (Crilly) McCloskey. After graduating from high school, she studied religion, music, and education at the College of St. Teresa in Winona. In 1973, she married Joseph A. Hoehn. They lived in Minnesota and California prior to their return to Worthington, Minnesota, where they made their home and raised their family.
Carol’s deep faith guided her to a life of serving people of all types and backgrounds within her vibrant community. She worked as a Montessori teacher, an elementary education paraprofessional, and a teacher of English learners. During her years as an educator, Carol also assisted Joe with his work with Lutheran Social Services and after, maintaining their business, Prairie Rose Counseling Center. After Joe retired in 2012, they moved to Shakopee to be closer to their grandchildren.
Carol was a harvester and canner of Joe’s extensive garden, maintaining the Hoehn family pickle tradition. She persistently listened to Classical MPR and truly enjoyed classical music and opera. She instilled her love of music in her sons, Ben and Noah, supporting them over the years with lessons, instruments, and attending every concert. Carol had fond memories of her time in 4-H and was involved with the local 4-H club and all of her sons’ pursuits and interests. She had a soft voice and a calming demeanor-unless she was at one of the boys’ baseball games. Carol loved good books and inspiring poems, and she was an avid Charlie Brown and Laura Ingles Wilder fan. In her later years, nothing compared to a good hug from her grandkids.
Survived by her two sons, Ben (Meg) Hoehn of Minneapolis, Noah (Sarah) Hoehn of Minnetonka; four grandchildren, Amelia, Elsa, Leo, and Cassia; brother Tom McCloskey; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe, sister MaDonna Johnson and her husband Robert, sister Patricia Hanson; and sister-in-law, Linda McCloskey.
