Dale “Rosie” E. Rosenthal, 90

Dale “Rosie” Edward Rosenthal was a caring, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He left us September 15, 2024, at age 90.

He was born to Rollo and Myrtle (Ous) Rosenthal on March 29, 1934. After graduating from Austin High School in 1954, he continued working at R&E Food Market. On January 11, 1958, he married Shirley Coreen Norris. Together they had four children, Scott, Penny, Tim, and Lisa.

Rosie returned to school at Riverland Community College, earned a degree in business marketing and started a new career as a franchise owner of Rosie’s Ribbon Recycling. He continued this work into his late 70s. We’re not sure if the recycling was about saving the planet or feeding his need to interact with a diverse group of people, but we think he achieved both. Rosie also drove a school bus for 20+ years. The kids on his bus route brought him the greatest joy and he loved sharing stories of his adventures with them.

Rosie will be remembered as a lifelong Austin resident, member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, lefse/bread/soup maker extraordinaire, husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. Rosie loved rooting for the Minnesota Vikings and Twins at home and in the stadium. Rosie’s final wish was granted when upon his passing, he was accepted into the Mayo Clinic Body Donation Program.

Rosie is survived by his wife, Shirley Rosenthal; children, Penny Rosenthal of Austin, MN, Tim (Barb) Rosenthal of Madison, WI, and Lisa (Jim) Jorgensen of Waconia, MN; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Mettille, M. Scott Mettille, Emily Rosenthal, Samuel Rosenthal, and Carter Jorgensen; sister-in-law, Rhonda Rosenthal; and many nieces and nephews. Rosie was preceded in death by his parents, Rollo and Myrtle Rosenthal; son, Scott Rosenthal; brothers, Jon (Jean) Rosenthal and Jerry Rosenthal; and his sister, Ruth Rice (Rosenthal).

Sincere thanks to St. Croix Hospice and the Cedars of Austin CNAs and RNs for their sincere kindness, care, and compassion for Rosie and the family.

A memorial service for Rosie will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. The visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be held at a later date in Grandview Cemetery, Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org). Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes are assisting the family with arrangements.
