The Austin football team started off in a big hole it couldn’t crawl out of as it lost to Kasson-Mantorville 47-7 in Art Hass Stadium Friday night.

The Packers (0-3 overall) committed four first half turnovers and the KoMets (2-1 overall) scored on all of their seven first half possessions to take a 40-0 lead into halftime.

Austin head coach Ed Schmitt said the Packers were a lot closer than it looked to putting together some competitive plays.

“We’re close. When the hole is there, we have one block miss,” Schmitt said. “On defense all week we were closing in on the ball and tackling everybody, but out here, for whatever reason, our eyes were taking us in different places where we shouldn’t be, and that’s the youth and inexperience. We’ve just got to get better every day.”

Austin was hit by the injury bug again as senior Garlo Gee and Cale Tupy both missed significant time after being banged up early on.

“Our depth is lacking and it shows,” Schmitt said. “It’s just a next man up mentality and we’ve gotta keep going.”

The Packers scored their first points in the third quarter when Triumph Ogbedie hauled in a 68-yard TD from Jamison Bastyr to bring the team within 40-7.
