HAYFIELD – A lot has changed with the Hayfield volleyball team this year, but not much is different for Hayfield sophomore Kenna Rutledge, who has been in the Hayfield Gym for as long as she can remember.
Rutledge, who helped the Vikings in a 25-16, 25-23, 25-21 win over Blooming Prairie Thursday, grew up watching her older sister Carrie Rutledge play volleyball, basketball and softball for the Vikings and now she’s following in her sister’s footsteps.
Kenna had five kills and eight assists as the Vikings (3-6 overall) had a balanced attack in the win.
“I always looked up to my sister and I always wanted to be like her. I watched her dominate on this floor and now I get a chance to do that with all of my friends,” Kenna said. “It’s kind of tricky getting a new coach (this year) and learning different things. Our new coach has helped us throughout the process and made us better.”
Hayfield’s new head coach is Samantha Furman and she’s still getting to know her squad after the team has a whole new cast of contributors this fall. On Thursday, sophomore Jenna Christopherson had nine kills, junior Isabel Winfield had 21 digs and senior Breanna Subbert had four kills.
“I was going in with a fresh slate this year,” Furman said. “I know we graduated seven seniors and there was a lot of inexperience, but I’ve never had a team work harder. Whether we’re coming off a win or a loss, they come into practice and they give me 110 percent.”
Christopherson came up with a big kill to tie the game at 21-21 in game two and she delivered a crucial block kill to put Hayfield up 17-14 in the final game. She is starting to find her rhythm in her first year of major varsity action.
“I’m embracing every role I’ve played this year and we’ve all kind of moved around a lot. Everybody has played a huge part on this team and it’s been really great,” Christopherson said. “We all support each other as a team and we always remember we’re a family. We have to lift each other up, no matter how good we’re doing or how bad we’re doing. We have to be in the right mindset.”
BP is now 3-6 overall.
