The Minnesota State Patrol says the 19-year-old driver whose SUV collided with a school bus near Hibbing Thursday suffered life-threatening injuries and is being treated in a Duluth hospital.

According to the State Patrol, the driver was wearing a seatbelt and the airbag in the 2006 Toyota RAV-4 she was driving deployed upon impact. The 52-year-old bus driver was not seriously hurt.

Twenty-one students on the bus, which rolled over during the crash, were injured, but none were gravely hurt. Twelve of the students were transported to a nearby hospital to receive medical care.

The St. Louis County school district in northeastern Minnesota is the biggest in the state by area. Some students spend up to an hour on the bus to school every day.

The State Patrol also says alcohol was not involved in the crash. The collision is still under investigation.
