Joined by members of the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, the Austin VFW Post 1216 kicked off its 100th anniversary celebration with a ribbon cutting outside the location in downtown Austin Thursday afternoon.
Established on Aug. 15, 1924, the VFW aimed at celebrating around the actually anniversary, but had to push it back to make sure everybody could make the celebration.
“One hundred years of serving our veterans and community — that’s something special to be a part of,” said VFW Post Commander Justin Hutchinson.
The celebration continues Friday night with bingo at the VFW and then with a two-person best shot golf tournament Saturday at Cedar River Golf Course in Adams. Back in Austin, the VFW will host live music from 4:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday night.
On Sunday afternoon there will be a family day with bounce houses, free hotdogs, root beer and root beer floats. And then at 5 p.m. that night, a ceremony will be held where a time capsule will be packed up and sealed.
