The Mower County Sheriff’s Office is warning people of a scam where the scammers claim to be a part of the office.

According to Chief Deputy Dave Pike, the Sheriff’s Office has received reports of scamming phone calls where the caller claims to be a deputy requesting money, gift cards or Bitcoin and citing various reasons the payment must be made immediately to them.

“The public is reminded that deputies will never call, text or email to ask for money to satisfy a warrant or court action,” Pike said in an email. “If you are contacted by someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer and you are suspicious, stop the communication, call dispatch, and ask to speak to that law enforcement officer.”

People are also reminded to never pay or plan to meet with someone to make a payment to avoid arrest or pay fees for missing jury duty/court.

People are invited to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 507-437-9400 if you have any questions.
