The Lyle-Pacelli girls basketball team hung around for parts of the night, but Lanesboro eventually pulled away to beat the Athletics 56-32 in Pacelli Gym Friday night.
The Athletics (5-6 overall) never held a lead and they trailed 37-19 early in the second half. However, the LP was able to surge within 39-27 after sophomore Madeline Klankowski, who finished with six points and seven rebounds, converted a lay-up.
The Burros (4-2 overall) responded with a 9-2 spurt that put the game out of reach.
“We’re putting a little bit together and we’re just waiting to put it all together,” LP head coach Lee Bauer said. “We’re only doing it for a little bit of time during the game and when we do it looks good, we just need to find a way to keep the good minutes going.”
Senior Kirsten Koopal led LP with 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, but some of the younger LP players had a tough time matching the Burros’ strength.
“It’s not so much the skill level, it’s the physicality that they came in and played with. We haven’t seen a lot of Southeast Conference style basketball yet,” Bauer said. “We just have to learn how to play that way.”
