Our opinion: Why did my event not get covered in the paper?

In the past, maybe even as recently as a decade ago, when a person called or stopped by to invite someone in the newsroom to an upcoming event, most of the time a journalist would be available to attend, conduct interviews and take photos.
As the news staff has changed in size over the years, it has become harder for our now two journalists on staff to get to all of the events a larger staff would have covered in the past.
We have to consider several different factors when we determine which events to cover, including how many people the event impacts, how important the event is to readers and what potential consequence it could have on the community.
We have to look at things like if someone of prominence will be there — for example, if the governor is going to be at an event, we’d probably have to cover that event over another event at the same time simply based on the significance of that role and how infrequently that individual visits the community.
In addition, a lot of times we have to consider what else is happening that same day and if we have the resources to be there, as well as when the last time was that we covered the event.
As much as our journalists want to cover more firsthand, it is not always physically possible in-between other meetings, preparing the newspaper for print and other obligations.
If one of our journalists is not able to cover your event, we hope you know that this doesn’t mean your event is not important to us or other readers. We ask that you please not hesitate to submit photos to us and even a brief summary of what happened at your event, and we would love to print them, usually within a week.
That goes for ahead of your event, too. As much as you think people know about your event ahead of time, that’s not always the case. Let us help you promote it and reach even more people. There have been times when we have not known about an event until after it had come and gone, and we’re sure we weren’t the only ones in that situation.
If you have information or photos, please submit them to newsroom@austindailyherald.com or drop them off in-person at 1511 West Oakland Avenue.
