ADAMS – The ball was in constant motion as the Southland boys basketball wasn’t afraid to make the extra pass in a 97-56 win over LeRoy-Ostrander Tuesday.
The Rebels (3-0 overall) knocked down 11 three-pointers while collecting 17 assists as a team as the offense was clicking for most of the night.
“We played really, really well as a team,” Southland head coach Scott Koenigs said. “Nobody cares who scores the points. I’ve never seen a team like this who doesn’t care who scores the points. They’re a fun team to coach and we have high expectations for this year.”
The Rebels saw a 15-point first half lead dwindle into a 42-41 deficit after LO’s Reid Hungerholt converted a three-point play, but Southland charged back with a 21-0 run that put the game away.
Sophomore Henry Wiste, who finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds, and four assists, converted two three-point plays during the spurt and senior Noah Goergen hit a three and he converted a three-point play in the burst.
“We know everyone can score and we know everyone can shoot,” said Noah Goergen, who finished with 19 points, two blocked shots and two steals. “There are no ball hogs on the team and there’s not one player who scores every point. Everyone can score and it’s easy to find the open man.”
Noah’s younger brother Tate Goergen, a sophomore, chipped in 21 points, seven assists and three rebounds.
“(Tate and Henry) play basketball every day year round and they get better every day,” Noah said. “We push them and they’re doing great and holding their own as 15-year olds.”
Southland senior Maverick Hanna also had a big night as he knocked down six three-pointers, while scoring 18 points.
“It’s just catch and shoot,” Hanna said. “We play as a team and if you catch it open, let it fly. We’ve had each other’s backs from day one.”
The Rebels are off to a hot start as they have won each of their first three games by at least 35 points. Koenigs said he expects his team, which is averaging 86.7 points per game, to keep on producing on offense.
“They can shoot. These kids have been waiting for their opportunity. Last year was difficult because we played so many seniors and we played a rotation of 14 guys,” Koenigs said. “I knew what we had this year and I was really looking forward to this year. I love my guys from last year, but I was looking forward to having a seven or eight man rotation instead of a 14 man rotation because I know what these kids are capable of.”
Reid Hungerholt scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half to lead the Cardinals (1-2 overall).
