SMART announced Thursday a new initiative to support the health and well-being of senior community members.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2025, SMART will provide free medical transportation services to seniors aged 55 and older who need to travel to the Albert Lea or Austin campuses of the Mayo Clinic Health System. This includes route buses, demand services and shuttle services between Albert Lea and Austin.
This new service aims to ease the transportation burden for seniors seeking medical care, ensuring they can attend appointments, receive treatments, and access other essential healthcare services without the worry of transportation costs. In a press release issued Thursday, SMART reiterated its commitment to serving the community with accessible, reliable, and affordable transportation options.
SMART’s Free Medical Ride Program will provide curb-to-curb service to eligible seniors, ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey to and from their medical appointments. Seniors residing in the Albert Lea and Austin areas can take advantage of this service, which is designed to promote independent living and support the health of our valued community members.
