The Austin girls basketball team is hard enough to guard when senior Ajiem Agwa is putting up the big numbers she has in the past, but they’re even tougher to guard when the entire starting five is on its game.
That’s what happened in Ove Berven Gym Monday night as four Packers broke into double digits scoring in a 61-51 victory over Kasson-Mantorville.
Sophomore Quinn Osgood posted 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals, Agwa and Marissa Shute each scored 16 points, and sophomore Addison Walsh added 10 for the Packers (2-0 overall).
“Everyone is contributing something and the game is more fun when everyone is having fun,” Agwa said. “The chemistry is really good; everyone loves playing together and nobody hates anyone on the team. It’s a really good bonding experience.”
Austin took a 35-20 lead when Shute knocked down one of her four threes on the night, but KM (1-2 overall) stormed back into the game as it pulled within 57-51 on a three-pointer by Delaney Awe with 1:55 left. From that point, Austin was able to slow things down and close it out at the line.
The KoMets, who were led by Makenzie Carrier’s 24 points, had ended Austin’s season in the Section 1AAA Tournament last year and the Packers, who didn’t graduate anyone from that team, came in motivated on Monday.
“We knew who we had to stop tonight and they powered through some, but I think we did an excellent job stopping who we needed to,” Shute said. “We had revenge on our mind from last year and we went out there and did it.”
Austin head coach Eric Zoske said if the Packers can stay balanced on offense, they will be force to be reckoned with throughout the season.
“When we went into halftime, I looked at the scoreboard and we had scorers with nine, eight, eight, two, eight (points). It kind of took me back to a few years ago where we had five players who could score roughly 10 points,” Zoske said. “When that happens, we’re so much harder to guard and that helps Ajiem out quite a bit, because she’s the focal point of opposing defenses.”
KM 20 31 – 51
