In the ever-evolving landscape of education, identifying and supporting students at risk of academic failure or dropping out is paramount. Over the last year and a half, Austin Public Schools has been working to implement and develop tools to give educators and administrators early indicators of risk and support for students as guided by one of our Strategic Directions – Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports.

The Austin Public Schools Information Services department has developed new tools utilizing student data to alert and inform school leaders of students in need of academic, attendance and behavior supports.  Additionally, Austin Public Schools partnered with our Student Information System provider, Infinite Campus, in 2023-2024 to implement its Early Warning System (EWS), a cutting-edge tool designed to address this critical need.

The Infinite Campus Early Warning System leverages data analytics to pinpoint students who may require additional support. By analyzing a range of factors, including attendance records, behavior incidents, and academic performance, the system generates early warning indicators. These indicators help educators identify students who are at risk long before their challenges become insurmountable.

One of the standout features of the EWS is its ability to facilitate personalized interventions. Once risk factors are identified, educators can create tailored action plans to address each student’s unique needs. This could involve academic tutoring, attendance or behavior interventions, counseling support, and engaging parents in the process. By providing targeted support, the EWS ensures that no student falls through the cracks.

The EWS empowers schools to make data-driven decisions. Administrators and teachers can access comprehensive reports that highlight trends and patterns within the student population. This data can inform school-wide strategies and policies aimed at improving overall student outcomes. For instance, if a significant number of students are flagged for attendance issues, a school might implement programs to improve engagement and attendance rates.

As technology continues to revolutionize education, tools like the Infinite Campus Early Warning System are becoming indispensable. By providing educators with the insights they need to support students effectively, the EWS is helping to create a brighter future for all students.
