The Austin boys basketball team made a charge to get back in the game after a slow start, but they faded away down the stretch as the Packers lost to Rochester Mayo 68-43 in Packer Gym Thursday.
The Spartans (6-3 overall) outscored Austin 19-3 over the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Packers crawled their way back to within 33-30 when Cole Hebrink hit a three with 14:34 left in the game. However, Mayo bounced back with a 24-6 surge that put the game out of reach.
Austin head coach Jamaal Gibson said he felt the Packers could’ve won if they had played their style, but it didn’t go that way.
“I thought it was obvious that we didn’t play our game,” Gibson said. “Defensively we were really lost, we knew exactly what they were doing and we refused to guard it. Offensively, I thought that was the most stagnant we’ve been all year round.”
Banyaan Omot poured in 20 points for the Packers (4-5 overall) as he was effective in the paint, and J’dan Stevens hit three three-pointers as he scored 12 points.
Hebrink added six points and four steals, but the rest of Austin’s roster combined for just four points in the loss.
“You can’t win basketball games like that. Our two guys are not Division I guys that are going to put up a ton of points, so you need balanced scoring out of the nine guys we play,” Gibson said.
Mayo 31 37 – 68
Austin 24 21 – 43
Austin scoring: Banyaan Omot, 20; J’dan Stevens, 12; Cole Hebrink, 6; Xzayveun Severin, 3; Ohlaani Omot, 2
