Lyle/Pacelli’s girls’ tennis team was unable to advance any of its competitors through to the semifinals of the Section 1A individual tournament Saturday in Rochester.
Sammi Jones and Anna Hebrink each won their singles openers before bowing out in the quarterfinals.
Laura Christopherson and Livja Burke won their No. 1 doubles opener but lost to a Rochester Lourdes pairing, while the No. 2 doubles team of Gretchen Hebrink and Brittany Hoban were knocked out in the first round.
Sixteen singles players and 16 doubles tandems started play in each of four brackets, dwindling down to the final four for Wednesday’s last two matches.
No Lyle/Pacelli players will be participating.
&uot;I think part of it for all our kids was we just haven’t had a match in over two weeks,&uot; said L/P coach Suzy Hebrink. &uot;We were certainly not peaking just due to our schedule and lack of matches down near the end here, so I think we were a little bit at a disadvantage unfortunately.&uot;
Jones defeated Anna Dawson of Lake City, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round before Lourdes senior Megan Tiegs, the top-rated player in Class A, eliminated Jones 6-1, 6-0.
&uot;Sammi actually had some very good points and a good game against her, but (Tiegs) is a very tough player,&uot; Hebrink said.
Anna Hebrink was seeded third in the No. 2 singles bracket, but Winona Cotter’s Sarah Leaf ended Hebrink’s run 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinal round.
Hebrink won by injury default over Ashley Schmidt in the first round. Hebrink was leading 6-4, 2-1 when Schmidt withdrew.
Christopherson and Burke knocked off a Shattuck-St. Mary’s pair in the opening match, but Lourdes’ second-seeded Caela Baker and Courtney Kramer downed the L/P pair 6-0, 6-1.
Hoban and Gretchen Hebrink fell 6-1, 6-1 to Molly Sjoquist and Laura Hobert of Cannon Falls.
