The Caledonia boys’ soccer team traded places with Austin from the 2001 postseason and turned the tables on the Packers in the opening round of Section 1A play.

Austin downed Caledonia a year ago at Wescott Field in the first round of Section 1 soccer action, but this time around it was Caledonia’s turn. The Warriors, seeded third, stopped sixth-seeded AHS 3-2 in overtime Saturday night in Caledonia.

The Packers’ season ended at 4-15 (4-10 in conference) for first-year coach Sam Kolas.

&uot;They scored with about a minute and a half left (in overtime) off of a free kick from a long ways away,&uot; Kolas said. &uot;It just kind of split the crowd and our goalie was screened and it went in.&uot;

Austin trailed 2-1 at the half despite outshooting the Warriors by a hefty margin. Dennis Christensen scored the Packers’ first-half goal on a header with two minutes to play.

Ivan Esquivel, Austin’s leading goal-scorer for the year, tallied the tying goal on a free kick in the second half, but Caledonia came back in the extra period for the game-winner.

&uot;They got a couple lucky goals and we missed a lot of opportunities to score in the first half,&uot; Coach Kolas said. &uot;The second half was very tight, it was a closely contested game.&uot;

Caledonia travels Tuesday to play second-seeded LaCrescent.

Ramblers roll past AHS girls' soccer team

Third-seeded Winona Cotter eliminated the sixth-seeded Austin girls’ soccer team from the postseason with a scoring frenzy, 7-1, Saturday night at Winona’s Maxwell Field.

Peggy Keane scored four goals for Cotter (13-4-1), who advance to Tuesday’s Section 1A semifinals at Kasson-Mantorville.

Leah Brandon scored the final goal of the season for Austin (4-11-2) on a breakaway six minutes into the second half. The Packers attempted just six shots with four on goal in the season-ending loss.

Cotter attempted 34 shots, 18 of which were on net for senior goalkeeper Kelly Momsen.
