Celebrating independence … again

Get ready to celebrate Independence Day. Southern Sudan’s Independence Day, that is.

Local residents are invited to the Southern Sudan Independence Day Celebration at Rochester Community Technical College Saturday, where among Austin Sudanese residents people can enjoy Sudanese food and cultural dances.

The party begins at 1 p.m., where dances and speeches will be made. Austin Mayor Tom Stiehm may or may not make a speech, as he’s been invited but hadn’t planned on speaking.

There will be a slight break at 5 p.m., then the party picks up from 6 p.m. all the way to 7 a.m. Sunday.

Southern Sudan gained its independence from the northern part of Sudan in January after more than 50 years of civil wars and strife plagued the African nation.
