Tim Neuvirth rushed for a career-high 111 yards and two touchdowns as the Southland football team tallied a 42-0 rout over host Lewiston-Altura Friday night for the Rebels' first Three Rivers Conference victory.
The shutout is Southland's third of the season and first in South Division play. The Rebels racked up 238 yards rushing behind a dominant offensive line.
"I thought the offensive line did just a tremendous job," said Southland coach Dick Strand. "It was their best out of all our games this season.
"Tim Neuvirth is going to be a real factor for us. He ran with a lot of conviction, he was out to show he could be the man."
Neuvirth had been slowed by a slightly sprained ankle most of the season yet was playing both sides of the ball. On Friday, Coach Strand limited the running back strictly to offensive duties and the move paid dividends.
"We just let him concentrate on offense and it seemed to pay off," Strand said. "On Friday night we played by far our best game of the year. The offensive line took control of the game and made it simple."
Quarterback Adam Nagele also rushed for two touchdowns and tailback Steve Snyder broke a scoreless tie with his 5-yard touchdown run. Southland's five remaining touchdown runs were from 1-yard out.
Pete Churchill capped the Rebels' 16-point third-quarter with Southland's final touchdown.
Greg Retterath made two of Southland's three interceptions, while Nagele needed to attempt just three passes. Tim Schneider also ran for a pair of two-point conversions.
"This win put is into a good position in our section," Strand said. "If we win out we get second seed, we've just got to try and win out."
