The swoon of strong 9-man opponents is over for the Lyle/Pacelli football team, which picked up its first road victory in two seasons in Friday's 26-0 shutout of host Glenville-Emmons.

L/P has now won two in a row, moving into a three-way tie for fourth in the Southern Confederacy Conference. Sophomore quarterback Jake Kaput made his first start as signalcaller for Lyle/Pacelli (2-4, 2-3) and Chris Bergstrom carried it the rest of the way.

Bergstrom made touchdown runs of 23 and 35 yards, and Kaput completed touchdown passes of 39 and 38 yards to Nels Nelson for a Lyle/Pacelli team fired up to be past the toughest half of its schedule.

"We had a feeling we could win this game, nobody else believed it but we believed it," L/P coach Mark Buntje said. "We as coaches and players knew we could win. Glenville-Emmons truly thought they were going to beat us."

Kaput was 6-for-11 with 153 yards passing against the host Wolverines, who challenged L/P to throw the ball from the get-go by putting six men within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. Kaput rose to the challenge with L/P's first and last touchdowns coming through the air.

"We're improving, we're getting better every week," Buntje said.

Joey Greibrok, the starting quarterback for L/P for the first five weeks, moved to tight end and made an immediate impact. Greibrok caught a 25-yard pass from Kaput early in the third quarter to set up Bergstrom's second touchdown run of the night. Bergstrom finished with 22 carries for 168 yards, moving him to 877 yards rushing on the season.

"Our five guys up front get a lot of the credit," Buntje said. "Nick Ehret, Mark Van Winter, Mike Aananson, Josh Mattick and Joey Greibrok did a great job on the offensive line, and Shawn Harmon and Ben Boyd our fullbacks opened some holes, and our wideouts did a good job of blocking downfield.

"If Bergstrom would have had 80 yards to go he would have."

Kellen Blaser chipped in with 63 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Glenville-Emmons was limited to 107 yards of total offense as the L/P defense forced three interceptions and had six quarterback sacks. Greibrok and Mattick had two each.

"Our line teed off and put a lot of pressure on the quarterback," Coach Buntje said.

Boyd, Ehret and Jake Burzinski each had interceptions for Lyle/Pacelli, who look to start a three-game win streak at Cleveland (1-5, 1-4) Friday.

"Confidence is a big key," Coach Buntje said. "We went over to Glenville figuring they'd be up to play and they were. They forced us to pass and we had some success with it and they kind of had to back off.

"We'll get some things ironed out and be back for next week."
