Senior Center: Canning class coming to Senior Center
Published 4:38 pm Saturday, July 9, 2011
By Sara Schafer
This week the senior center is offering two classes of great variety. On Thursday, July 14, we are hosting a fun class on how to can your own jam or jelly. You saw them on the Fourth of July at the band shell: Chris Von Arx and his twin daughters will be teaching this class. They will walk you through step-by-step canning your own jam. While your waiting for the jars to seal Olivia and Maria will show you how to make bonbon’s. Take your jam and bonbon’s with you when this class is done. The class is only $10 and all materials you will need are provided for you. Sign up by calling 433-2370 ext. 0 or stopping by the front desk.
Watch for signs of cancer
Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. If left unchecked, these cancer cells can spread from the skin into other tissues and organs. Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer. It is estimated that over 1 million new cases occur annually. The annual rates of all forms of skin cancer are increasing each year, representing a growing public concern. It has also been estimated that nearly half of all Americans who live to age 65 will develop skin cancer at least once. The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a change in the appearance of the skin, such as a new growth or a sore that will not heal.
The term “skin cancer” refers to three different conditions. From the least to the most dangerous, they are:
• basal cell carcinoma (or basal cell carcinoma epithelioma)
• squamous cell carcinoma (the first stage of which is called actinic keratosis)
• melanoma
To learn more about skin cancer prevention, therapies and functional foods join the Hormel Institute as they present “Research history” at the Senior Center July 15th at 3:00. Walk-ins are welcome. You can sign up by calling 433-2370 ext. 0. You are always welcome at the Senior Center. See you soon.
