Close has become not close enough for the Lyle/Pacelli girls' tennis team.
L/P is ready for the match experience to turn into team wins, but that was not the case as Martin County West came to Austin Monday night and stole a 4-3 match.
Lyle/Pacelli dipped to 0-8 overall, with Hiawatha Valley League team Cannon Falls hosting the team Thursday. L/P has three regular-season matches remaining, including the final two against Shattuck-St. Mary's.
"Cannon Falls will be a tough match," said L/P coach Suzy Hebrink. "It'll be a good one for some of our singles to play there. They always have a tough team."
Anna Hebrink recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles to highlight L/P's loss. Sammi Jones picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles, and Gretchen Hebrink posted a three-set triumph, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Livja Burke and Laura Christopherson forced a tie-breaker in their two-set loss at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), while Marta Burke and Lizzy Gunter went down 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles. Brittany Hovey was swept at No. 4 singles, as were Jenny Fisher and Sarah Larson.
