The Austin Public School Board approved its 2002-03 activity fees and fees for admission to athletic events Monday.

This year, Austin High School athletes will have to pay $75 for their first sport, $60 for their second sport and their third sport will be free. Ellis Middle School athletes will have to pay $40 for their first and second sports and their third sport also will be free.

The family athletic cap will be $270.

For other extracurricular activities, there will be a $40 fee for instrument rental and participation on the debate team.

A $20 fee is required for those who participate in art club, DECA, a one-act play, the fall musical, the spring play, the flag line, FFA, the Knowledge Bowl, the math league, mock trial, jazz band, string ensemble, vocal jazz and VICA. Students in need of a band uniform will have to pay a $20 fee, as well.

Free activities include AFS, cheerleading, CHOICE, FUSION, drama club, key club, National Honor Society, the Sentinel, the Austinian, student council and youth leadership.

The individual activity fee cap is $60.

For admission to an athletic event, a single-event pass will cost adults $5, elementary students, middle school students and high school students will have to pay $3 and AHS students with their IDs can get in free.

For a year pass to athletic events, adults will have to pay $50 and students will need to pay $30. A season pass for students will cost $15. A senior citizen year pass will be free.

The activity fees and admission fees are unchanged from last year.

Also at Monday's meeting, Sheila Berger, educational services director, announced the current enrollment figures for the elementary schools.

Currently, at Banfield, 65 students are enrolled in kindergarten, 65 in first grade, 83 in second grade, 67 in third grade, 75 in fourth grade and 101 in fifth grade. Total enrollment at Banfield is 469, which is down from last year's 488.

At Neveln, 55 students are enrolled in kindergarten, 59 in first grade, 52 in second grade, 64 in third grade, 73 in fourth grade and 62 in fifth grade. Total enrollment at Neveln is 365, which is up from last year's 355.

At Southgate, 98 students are enrolled in kindergarten, 82 in first grade, 66 in second grade, 82 in third grade, 91 in fourth grade and 93 in fifth grade. Total enrollment at Southgate is 512, which is down from last year's 541.

At Sumner, 68 students are enrolled in kindergarten, 76 in first grade, 65 in second grade, 74 in third grade, 70 in fourth grade and 66 in fifth grade. Total enrollment at Banfield is 419, which is down from last year's 444.

District-wide, total enrollment in the elementary schools is 1,765, which is down from last year's 1,828.

Berger said enrollment numbers were not yet available for the middle school and the high school because those numbers "are more fluid and harder to pin down" until after school starts.
