Do you want to go back in time? Then head on over to the Mower County Historical located at the Mower County Fairgrounds.

Sue Getzin became a volunteer with the historical society after researching genealogy on her Grandfather Newell.

Getzin said, "I couldn't get too much information as my grandfather didn't live in Austin long. I liked coming here though, and thought it was very comfortable and the ladies were so nice that I offered to volunteer."

Getzin is a new volunteer, having only done it twice. Nine people volunteer at the Mower County Historical Society and more are always needed. Marge Carroll has been a volunteer for 30 years, longer than any other volunteer.

Shirley DeYoung, the executive director of the historical society, overseas all the volunteers. She is always on the look out for volunteers and for people to become members of the historical society.

"Membership is only $10 a year. I have a membership drive every April. We have 19 buildings and during the fair, volunteers work two hour shifts. We are very busy during this time," said DeYoung.

Getzin had not been a frequent visitor to the historical society except for visiting the museum during fair time. Her favorite part of the museum is the Indian Museum. On this particular day Getzin was filing photos for the historical society on their data base.

"There is a lot of information for people to gather at the Mower County Historical Society. People can photocopy old news stories, find out about their own genealogy and the history of our area," said Getzin.

The Mower County Historical Society museums will be open from 1 to 8 p.m. Aug. 6 through Aug. 10, during the fair. The regular hours for the museum are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
