Two men were arrested early Tuesday following a police search of their residence that turned up methamphetamine.

The men, ages 30 and 37, were taken to the Mower County Jail and await formal criminal charges, which will likely come Wednesday.

According to a police report, the search occurred at around 7:05 a.m. at 811 Third St. NW. Officers from the Austin Police Department, the Mower County Sheriff’s Office and the Southeast Minnesota Narcotics and Gang Task Force entered through the front door and found the two men on a living room couch. Both were arrested without incident.

Officers also had to ward off two pitbulls. Using short bursts from a fire extinguisher, they were able to coax the dogs into a bathroom and shut the door.

After arresting the two males and securing the dogs, authorities then searched the residence. In the living room, they found just less than 3 grams of meth, packed into several tightly folded pieces of paper called “bindles.”

No other items were seized during the search, and there were no apparent signs that the two were trafficking or manufacturing meth.

The warrant was a result of an ongoing investigation by the SEMNGTF. Lt. Brain Krueger of the Austin Police Department said he does not expect any further arrests to be made as part of the investigation.

Krueger also said the nearly 3 grams of meth seized Tuesday represents a sizable, but not overly large, amount as compared to other area drug busts.
