Weekend Watch: Pinewood Derby to be held

The Hayfield Cub Scouts will be hosting the first-ever public Pinewood Derby Sunday as a part of the Hayfield Hey Days.
The event features four races, all with miniature cars made from a kit consisting of a block of wood, wheels and decals. The scouts build the cars themselves, with the help of a parent depending on their age. Adults also are able to participate in the event.
"Anybody and everybody can race a car," said James Becvar, a scout leader.
City
organizations helped raise $1,500 to purchase the 40-foot track for the race. The track will be set up in the old fireman's hall in Hayfield.
Registration will be held 12 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. To participate costs $2. The money will help scout leaders attend camps and help with general operating costs.
The four categories are:
n 8 years older and younger
n 9 to 13 years old
n 13 and older (including adults)
n "Vintage" race, with older miniature cars.
Becvar's 5-year-old and 10-year-old sons are building cars for the race and Becvar also will participate.
"I have some vintage cars," Becvar said. "I'm going to get out and race."
Becvar has been helping his 5-year-old son with the car, but his other son has been doing most of the work himself.
"The whole idea of scouting is to teach these boys responsibility and do things that get fathers involved," Becvar said.

LeRoy SummerFest continues with a street dance tonight. On Saturday, an ice cream social will be at 11 a.m. and a Windsor Chop supper will be at 5 p.m. An ecumenical service will be held 10 a.m. Sunday and a chicken feed will begin at 11 a.m. A parade wraps up the festivities.
Racine is host to two events this weekend: The eighth annual Burr Oak Buffalo Fest and the Antique Engine and Tractor Show. Tom and Shelly Kreaetsch have invited the public to learn about buffaloes starting 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The event lasts until 6 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday.
