Meyer strikes out 11, Greyhounds win league game at Owatonna

The Austin Greyhounds Class B Amateur baseball team picked up its sixth consecutive win with a three-run outburst in the top of the eighth inning in a Southern Minny League game at Owatonna Wednesday night. The 'Hounds, fueled by the pitching of Dave Meyer, scored all their runs in the eighth for a 3-1 win.

Meyer went the distance for Austin, allowing three hits and one walk against 11 strikeouts. Owatonna scored its only run in the home half of the first inning as two of its three hits were doubles.

Nick Rohne's misplayed grounder allowed John Frein -- who led off the eighth with a single -- to score the tying run. Frein was sacrificed to second by Mitch Mullenbach, and Rohne came through by putting the bat on the ball. After a single by Tate Cummins, Rohne scored what would prove to be the game-winner on Craig Selk's two-run single.

Cummins, Selk and Bryan Toov each had two hits for the Greyhounds (21-6, 4-1), who start play in the Cold Spring Tournament Friday night at 8 p.m. Austin plays the Dassel Saints in its first game. The 'Hounds have St. Cloud Ultimate in Saturday's 7 p.m. match and tourney-host Cold Spring in Sunday's 3 p.m. contest. The host Springers are the two-time defending Class B State Amateur champions.

"It'll be a little bit of a tell-tale (tournament)," Austin player/coach Joe Serratore said, "and we're not playing very good right now."

Austin beat St. Cloud Ultimate in last year's state tournament quarterfinals, 12-2, but lost to Cold Spring two times in two days in the championship duel.
